Yes, search is important and a big part of user experience. Given the informational diversity and the particular situational context, we as developers need to provide the best possible experience to the consumer. Whereas the UI code is an important part of it, the algorithms behind the scenes are even more important. Come and have a deep dive session into Information Retrieval and search queries! Examples will be given in ASP.NET MVC 4, Lucene, and Visual Studio 11.

 

Chander Dhall is a Microsoft MVP, professional software architect/lead developer, trainer, INETA speaker, open source contributor, community leader and organizer with  years of experience in enterprise Software Development. He works in a goal oriented, technologically driven, fast paced AGILE (SCRUM) environment. He is the founder of Dallas day of dot net. Bottles, developed by the same team that brought you FubuMVC and HtmlTags, is a new way to bring extensiblity into your application. The team built Bottles to reduce the burden of building large extensible applications. Using Bottles, teams now have a vocabulary for discussing composition at the application layer.

In the sharing session, Dru Sellers will go over the basics of Bottles, what it can do, how it’s being used, and a small demo where Dru will walk through each aspect of the framework.
In the world of .NET Open Source community, Dru is a familiar name.  Part of the team that brought you Topshelf (a framework for simplifying service hosting on Windows and UNIX) and MassTransit (a distributed application framework), he is also one of the committers for the Castle Project project as well as FubuMVC, an Open Source MVC framework for ASP.NET.

Metro introduces a new application lifecyle in which your application could be terminated at anytime. This example driven session will explore how to write applications that sucessfully manage persisted, session and view state in the Metro environment allowing you to provide a good user experience for your end users. We will also look learn about the new asynchronous programming model in WinRT and C# 5.0.  The concepts apply to all Metro development but will be demonstrated using C# and XAML.

Ryan Vice is a Microsoft enterprise developer with 12 years experience and lives and works in Austin, TX with his wife and family. He’s currently working as a Principal Consultant for Headspring where he is working on an enterprise WPF project for an pipeline management company. He has exprience creating solutions in numerous industries including network security, geoseismic, banking, real estate, entertainment, finance, trading, construction, online retail and credit councelling. He has done projects for companies of all sizes including high volume applications for large fortune 500 companies like Dell and Charles Schwab. He’s frequently presents sessions at users groups and conferences throughout Texas including Houston Tech Fest, Austin Code Camp, and Dallas Day of .Net. He’s was awarded Microsoft MVP for Connected Systems in July of 2010 and again in 2011. He’s a MSDN Moderator. He’s published as a contributor and technical reviewer in “Windows Workflow Foundation 4.0 Cookbook” by Packt Publishing and he’s currently working on his first book “MVVM Survival Guide for Enterprise Architectures in WPF and Silverligh” which is due out summer of 2012. His current areas of focus are around MVVM, WPF, XAML and Metro.

There are lots of buzzwords these days. Let’s pull apart some of these popular libraries and technologies and figure out what problems they solve and what problems we’re left to solve on our own. Let’s also look into out how to make this all work the way that we want… in all the browsers that we want. We’re not talking about performing magic; we’re talking about setting expectations and realities. The talk will cover some implementation details about some of these new technologies, but will more importantly offer a framework for thinking about next year’s buzzwords too.

Alex Sexton is a Labs Engineer at Bazaarvoice in Austin, TX. He is a member of the jQuery and Modernizr teams, and the creator of yepnope.js and most recently Jed (a JavaScript i18n library). Brandon Satrom

Our first talk of the year will feature Brandon Satrom on HTML5.  HTML5 is the biggest and most powerful HTML specification to ever come out of the W3C. Its roots come from a proposal to extend HTML4 to make it easier for web developers to create web applications. With more and more browsers supporting HTML5, ECMAScript 5 and other web standards, developers now have a strong web platform they can use to create a new class of application that is more powerful and interactive than ever before. What’s in HTML5 that lets us take our applications to the next level?

Brandon Satrom is a Developer Evangelist with Microsoft based in Austin, Texas. He has eleven years of industry experience, splitting his time evenly between consulting/service organizations and internal IT shops. A Software and Enterprise Architect, Brandon has worked on projects of all shapes for companies large and small, most recently using technologies such as WCF, WF, ASP.NET MVC with a healthy dose of OSS. Brandon is active in the Austin technology community, both as a participant in local user groups and as President of the IASA Austin chapter. He lives in Austin with his wife and son and blogs about software architecture and development at  http://www.userinexperience.com.
